Why a specialist

What is a prosthodontist — and why it matters

Any dentist can place a crown. A prosthodontist went on, after dental school, to complete a postgraduate specialty devoted entirely to replacing and restoring teeth: how a bite should work, which material holds up where, how force is distributed over an implant, and how a smile looks natural instead of “done”.

You won't notice the difference the day you leave the office. You'll notice it five years later: the crown that hasn't come loose, the implant that's still solid, the denture that doesn't hurt.

A prosthodontist is the right choice if:

  • You're missing one or more teeth and want implants.
  • You have old crowns or bridges that look bad or keep coming off.
  • Your teeth are worn down or your bite is off.
  • You want veneers or a smile makeover that looks natural.
  • You wear dentures that no longer fit, or want something fixed instead.

U.S. patients

Coming from Calexico, El Centro or Imperial Valley?

Many of our patients cross from the U.S. Here's how we make it easy:

The practical part

  • 10 minutes from the Calexico border, in Colonia Libertad.
  • English or Spanish — whichever you prefer.
  • Grouped appointments: we do as much as possible on each trip.
  • Written plan priced in Mexican pesos with a USD estimate.
  • Cash, card or bank transfer.

The part that matters

Crossing the border for dental work is worth it only if a specialist does it, and if you know exactly what will be done, in how many visits, and what it costs. That's what you get at your first appointment.

  1. A photo of your insurance card (front and back).
  2. The policyholder's full name and date of birth.
  3. The treatment you're interested in, if you know it.

For U.S. dental insurance plans only. Ask us on WhatsApp whether we accept yours.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a prosthodontist?

A dentist who, after dental school, completed a postgraduate specialty in replacing and restoring teeth: implants, crowns, veneers, bridges and dentures. Prosthodontists plan and carry out full-mouth rehabilitation.

Does getting an implant hurt?

It's done under local anesthesia, so the procedure itself doesn't hurt. Afterwards, most patients report mild discomfort for 2 to 3 days, managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

How long does an implant take, start to finish?

Usually 3 to 6 months: the implant is placed, allowed to heal and fuse with the bone, and then the final crown goes on. If bone is lacking, a preliminary stage may be needed.

How long does an implant last?

With good hygiene and check-ups, decades. The crown on top is typically replaced after 10 to 15 years of normal wear.

How many visits do I need if I'm coming from the U.S.?

Crowns and veneers: usually 2 visits. Implants: 2 or 3 stages, weeks apart. You get the exact schedule in writing at your evaluation so you can plan your trips.

Do I need a passport to cross into Mexicali?

You need a valid passport or passport card to re-enter the U.S. Mexicali is a short walk or drive from the Calexico crossing; many patients walk across and take a taxi.

Zirconia or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns?

Zirconia is metal-free, very strong and leaves no dark line at the gum. It's the usual choice for visible teeth; we'll tell you if another option suits your case better.

How much does it cost?

It depends on your case. After your consultation you get a written plan with the exact cost in pesos and an approximate USD equivalent.

How can I pay?

Cash, card and bank transfer.

Do I need an appointment for the evaluation?

Yes. Book on WhatsApp or by phone and we'll confirm a day and time. The evaluation includes an exam and diagnosis.
