How a dental implant is planned

Before placing an implant you need to know exactly where it goes, what size and at what angle. That is why Dr. Cota does not improvise in surgery: the case is simulated in 3D first, and the surgery follows that plan.

Dr. Cota explains implant planning (in Spanish)

1. First visit and intraoral scan

We examine your mouth and take an intraoral scan: a digital copy of your teeth and gums, with no uncomfortable impression trays.

2. 3D CT scan

The CT scan (also called cone beam) shows the bone where the implant goes in three dimensions. It shows how much bone you have and gives the exact implant size you need.

3. Case simulation

The scan and the CT are combined to project the case in 3D: where each implant goes and how the tooth on top will look. The best size is chosen before treating the patient.

Real case: three implants planned with 3D CT and placed in one appointment (in Spanish)

4. Guided surgery

Surgery follows the simulation, so the margin of error is minimal. In some cases several implants can be placed in one appointment, like the patient in the video (each one a single-tooth implant): an upper premolar, an upper molar and a lower molar.

5. Comfort during the procedure

Implants are placed under local anesthesia. For long procedures, Dr. Juan Macías, the team anesthesiologist, keeps you comfortable and pain-free.
